A common question we get asked at our cannabis retail storefront is what is THC? Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is one of the most abundant and widely known cannabinoids found in cannabis, and acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals naturally made by the human body. Tetrahydrocannabinol acts much like a neurotransmitter attaching to the CB1 receptors which are highly concentrated in the brain.
Tetrahydrocannabinol has been proven to have a number of positive effects on brain cells. It is considered a “neuroprotectant,” meaning it can protect brain cells from damage caused by things like inflammation and oxidative stress. THC can also promote the growth of new brain cells through a process known as neurogenesis. THC also stimulates cells in the brain to release dopamine, creating euphoria. As a medicine, tetrahydrocannabinol is a mild analgesic and cellular research has shown the compound has antioxidant activity.
THC is the cannabinoid responsible for the psychotropic effects felt from the use of cannabis. Cannabis often contains more THC than CBD, unless it was specifically bred to contain higher levels of CBD and low levels of THC. CBD is a non- psychoactive cannabinoid that is believed to reduce the psychoactive effects of THC.
When exposed to the air, the THC will begin to chemically degrade and convert to CBN, which is the best cannabinoid to fight insomnia, and only exhibits 10% of THC’s psycho-activity. It is also good to note that when THC is used in a topical application, there will be no psychotropic effects as there are no CB receptors located on the skin. The use of THC topical creams and balms will still be effective for patients in treating pain and inflammation.
THC has been found to be effective for:
- Lack of Appetite
- Diabetes (increases sensitivity to insulin)
- Cancer and Tumors
At FARM we carry a wide selection of THC based products, including:
